A man who works as a garbage collector notices a little girl waving at him every morning from a house where nobody is supposed to be living. Tim Jenkins, along with his colleague, drives around town collecting garbage. However, only the little girl seems to notice them. Every morning, as Tim approaches the house, the girl taps on the window to get his attention. She waves excitedly as Tim looks her way, mouthing something he cannot understand. Tim waves back, says good morning, and the girl smiles happily. This routine continues every day. Tim notices that despite the family living in the house, their garbage bins are always empty, and newspapers start to pile up on the front porch, making the house look abandoned. Worried about the little girl, Tim decides to investigate. One afternoon, after finishing work, he walks up to her house and rings the doorbell, hoping to find answers. However, there is no answer. Tim considers that maybe the girl is at school and her mother at work. However, something doesn’t feel right. On the neighboring house, everything looks well-kept and beautiful, with no signs of neglect. Feeling uneasy, Tim rings the doorbell, and after a while, a woman answers. Tim explains his concerns about the little girl next door, but the woman claims that there is no little girl living there and that the family moved away more than a week ago. Tim is unsure, as he had seen the little girl that morning. Troubled by this mystery, he can’t stop thinking about her. The following morning, when he sees the girl waving again, he decides to take action. He contacts the police and requests a wellness check at the house. Tim informs them of the little girl’s presence in a supposedly empty house. Two officers visit the house and, receiving no response, forcibly open the door. They find the entire house empty and still. However, they hear a noise coming from the kitchen. They discover the little girl hiding in the pantry, staring at them wide-eyed. The officers reassure her that they are there to help, but the girl remains silent. They learn that a man who drives by in a garbage truck every morning had informed them of the girl’s presence. Realizing she is mute, the officers also notice the lack of food in the house, except for stale crackers. The child has been abandoned. They call child services and inform Tim about their findings. A subsequent investigation reveals that the child’s father had passed away a few months prior, and the stepmother, who was responsible for her care, had abandoned her. The stepmother is subsequently issued a warrant for her arrest for abandonment and child endangerment. That night, Tim shares the story with his wife, and they decide to apply to be foster parents for the little girl named Me. Two years later, they adopt her, proving that family can be found in unexpected places.
