On February 28, 2016, Carrie and Larry Vollmer from Fort Worth, Texas, put their 17-month-old daughter to bed like any other night. She cried a bit but eventually fell asleep. Little did they know, their lives were about to change forever. The next morning, Larry made a horrifying discovery. He found his daughter’s lifeless body in her crib. The desperation and panic in Larry’s voice as he retrieved her from upstairs is a moment that Carrie will never forget. Sammy’s bedroom was on the second floor while her parents slept downstairs. It was later discovered that a malfunction in the temperature control system caused the temperature in Sammy’s room to rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite their efforts, Sammy could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead. Doctors explained that Sammy passed away in her sleep, and the couple realized their baby would not have been able to cry for help. The tragic incident prompted the Vollmers to set up a Facebook page in memory of their daughter called “Remembering Sammy Joyce Vollmer” to spread awareness and prevent similar tragedies. The loss of their child left an immense hole in their family that will never be filled. They miss her every day and keep her bedroom door open as a reminder of her presence.
